Centre of Excellence Time Series

Category: 2018
Sustained ocean observations are essential for understanding links between physical and chemical drivers and ecosystem responses and for investigations into how long-term changes in the underlying drivers might impact on ecosystem dynamics and the services these provide. However, the management of time series is complex and many issues from scientific to financial and scoietal, need to be taken into account for time series to be sustainable in the long-term. Therefore, while many time series courses have a focus on statistical techniques needed to analyse time series,  in this course we take a holistic approach. We will introduce you to different types of time series and will show you different tools for the visualisation and exploration of your time series data (both very important for …

Comunidades Locais e Utilização do Ambiente Marinho

Category: 2018

Data Visualization of Marine Met data (using FERRET)

Category: 2018
Data visualization is the science of describing the significance of data by placing it in a visual context. In the current scenario it is very useful for dealing with marine met data as patterns, trends and correlations that might go undetected in text-based data can be exposed and recognized easier with data visualization software. The current course will demonstrate the use of open source software FERRET for generation of NetCDF data and visualize various types of plots, save and reuse them at a later stage. The course is designed to be a mix of both practical and theoretical sessions. Aims and Objectives Provide an exposure to Data Visualization using FERRET. Generation of scripts to visualize various types of data sets (1D, 2D, 3D etc). Perform data analysis, generate added value prod…

Foundations of Marine Spatial Planning

Category: 2018
Increased activity in the coastal and marine environment has led to two important types of conflicts in the region: (1) conflicts among human uses (user-user conflicts); and (2) conflicts between human uses and the coastal and marine environment (user-environment conflicts). These conflicts weaken the ability of the ocean to provide the necessary ecosystem services upon which humans and all other life depend on. This course provides an introductory, but comprehensive, overview of CMSP. It focuses on describing a logical sequence of all the steps required to achieve desired goals and objectives for coastal and marine areas. This course does not focus on the technical details of any one of the steps and it is not intended to be a course that will help to develop a marine GIS or implement a …
