Ocean Best Practices

Category: 2022
Language: English
RTC/STC: RTC Belgium
Mode of Delivery: Online
IOC Programme: Ocean Best Practices
Calendar Groups: OceanTeacher

This course is an introduction to the Ocean Best Practices System. A
best practice is a methodology that has repeatedly produced superior
results relative to other methodologies with the same objective; to be
fully elevated to a best practice, a promising method should be adopted
and employed by multiple organizations. This short course provides an
overview of the importance and relevance of using and sharing Ocean Best
Practices and Standards, as well as on how to create, submit, share and
search for Best Practices in the Ocean Best Practices System (OBPS)
repository. This course is intended for University students, researchers
and ocean practitioners in general. It does not provide a certificate.

Supporting Marine Earth Observation Educators

Category: 2021
Calendar Groups: OceanTeacher
The current suite of Earth Observation satellites offer access to an unprecedented amount of information on the marine environment. Concurrently, there is a growing demand in research, governance, and commercial marine sectors, for personnel who can use this data. Training providers across these sectors is essential for maximizing the utility of this data and building necessary capacity. This course offers participants the opportunity to work with other trainers to incorporate the use of Copernicus marine data from EUMETSAT in to their own educational activities. Participants will learn how to use open access resources available through EUMETSAT and the Copernicus programme, and co-develop their own resources with a network of fellow participants and trainers from IODE, EUMETSAT and CMEMS.…

NF-POGO Centre of Excellence. Physics of the Climate System I (Basics)

Calendar Groups: OceanTeacher
The Physics of the Climate System “Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, sea level has risen, and the concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased.” This statement in the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2013 is based on a wide variety of climate observations and model simulations.  The present characteristics of the climate system are a product of a long-term evolution determined by external forcing (sun, volcanoes) and internal interactions within the climate system, which is composed of atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere, land surfaces, and the …
