AlgaeTraits: a trait database for (European) seaweeds

MAT_2022

AlgaeTraits: a trait database for (European) seaweeds

Belgium
Training Center

The amazing diversity of seaweeds is reflected in the ecological and morphological characteristics of the various species. Seaweed traits and functional forms have therefore long been used as a tool to answer various ecological and evolutionary questions. AlgaeTraits (https://algaetraits.org/) provides standardized trait information for all European seaweeds, enabling the use of trait-based approaches over broad taxonomic, spatial and temporal scales. AlgaeTraits is a thematic subregister of the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) (https://marinespecies.org/) which links to AlgaeBase (https://www.algaebase.org/), the most complete database on global algal taxonomic information.

Through the online AlgaeTraits portal, editors have access to the Aphia platform (the database behind WoRMS) to add new traits and related non-taxonomic information, and to make changes to already existing records. With this course, the AlgaeTraits editors will become more at ease with the online AlgaeTraits editing interface and will learn how to use the available functionalities and tools to standardize their actions and improve the AlgaeTraits and WoRMS databases.

Data management and publication through the Global Genome Biodiversity Network (GGBN)

GGBN_2022

Data management and publication through the Global Genome Biodiversity Network (GGBN)

Colombia
Training Center

The training course provides an introduction to (genetic) data management and publication through the Global Genome Biodiversity Network (GGBN), as well as an introduction to the GGBN and the use of its data portal, the data standards and several case studies from Latin American institutions that have published data from different types of collections through the GGBN. The course purpose is to give the necessary foundations to professionals from Latin America to use the GGBN data infrastructure for publishing and giving visibility to the information they preserve.

Culturing and microscopy techniques for the analysis of phytoplankton diversity

MicTechPhyto_2021

Culturing and microscopy techniques for the analysis of phytoplankton diversity

Belgium
Training Center

Phytoplankton comprises a range of very different organism from tiny and almost featureless picoplankton taxa to large diatoms and dinoflagellates nearing 1 mm in diameter. They essentially form the base of the food web and therefore a detailed knowledge of this diverse group of organisms is vital for developing an understanding of marine communities and their interactions with their environment and with each other. Unfortunately, the diversity of methods available for the quantitative and qualitative analysis is almost as diverse as the phytoplankton itself. This course will take you through the most important methodologies for quantitative and qualitative (non-molecular) biodiversity assessments of phytoplankton.

Seaweed diversity: an Ecuadorian perspective (Tropical East Pacific)

SIRENA_EC_2020

Seaweed diversity: an Ecuadorian perspective (Tropical East Pacific)

Belgium
Training Center

To ensure food and job security, food production systems need to be innovated so that they protect the environment, mitigate climate change and become more climate-resilient. This is an opportunity for seaweed culture which captures nutrients and CO2 and does not need freshwater or fertilizers. In Ecuador, edible seaweed is being produced by small farmers, but a sustainable biomass valorization strategy is missing. Moreover, a good knowledge of the existing seaweed species is still lacking.

This course offers an introduction to the diversity, taxonomy and biogeography of the seaweeds of the Tropical East Pacific (Ecuador), in the framework of the project Seaweed-based innovations for a resilient aquaculture and agriculture (SIRENA funded by VLIR-UOS).

Contributing datasets to EMODnet Biology

EMODnetBiology_2020

Contributing datasets to EMODnet Biology

Belgium
Training Center

Training originally set up for EMODnet Biology Partners (June 2020). During the Summer of 2020, this training course was opened up for self-enrolment, allowing all scientists & data managers access to its content. This way, they can use the available material to learn how to format, standardize and quality control their biological data for submission to e.g. the European node of the Ocean Biodiversity Information System (EurOBIS) or any other node within the OBIS network.
