Supporting Marine Earth Observation Educators

The purpose of this training workshop is to share knowledge, skills, resources and training techniques so that attendees are able to independently train others on available Earth Observation (EO) data and tools. During the course, participants will work with others to create their own (learning) artefacts. This is an interactive knowledge exchange workshop, not a technical training event.

Aims and objectives: 

  • To support marine and earth observation educators in their training activities, by sharing Copernicus Marine data resources and exchanging experience of different learning approaches.
  • To foster a community of marine EO educators who can collaborate in future.
  • To co-create learning artefacts that can used in participants own training activities and more broadly by the Earth observation community.

This free training course is suitable for anyone responsible for collecting or managing marine environmental data in the public sector, industry or for education or research. Familiarity with different marine data types, and how data is acquired and used, would be helpful but not essential. Prior knowledge or practical experience of data management is not required. The course can be taken as a whole, or attendees can select modules according to two streams: Governance; Practical MEDIN.

Vessel-based ocean monitoring with applications to R/V Dr Fridtjof Nansen surveys

The course has two main objectives: (i) to develop skills among marine environmental scientists participating in the EAF-Nansen Programme to perform onboard duties during surveys concerning the quality control, post-processing and reporting of the physical oceanography data, (ii) to introduce tools that will enable scientists from partner countries to access and use the collected historical time series at their home institutions (e.g. for preparing publications, reports, etc.).

Discovery and Use of Operational Ocean Data Products and Services

This course will demonstrate the data resources available from operational services of INCOIS. The focus will be on operational activities, various data and data products, outputs from INCOIS services, how to download them and use software to visualize. It will be a mix of practical and theoretical.

The course is aimed to provide an introduction to operational oceanography, discovery and use of operational ocean data products and services, hands on for visualizing the in situ, remote sensing and model derived data products.

The International Oceanographic Data Exchange (IODE) of IOC-UNESCO - together with regional partners across the globe - is developing an inclusive Ocean Data and Information System (ODIS) to allow digital stakeholders to reliably share and discover key ocean data. ODIS is built by its participants: anyone with data to share can become a node in the ODIS network. During this course, participants will be trained in how to link their systems into ODIS and to make them a more visible and actionable part of the ocean’s digital ecosystem. This course is available to ODIS partners only.
